Tooth Contouring | Prosper TX Dentist

As we age it is natural for our teeth to become more fragile and prone to chips and cracks. Those that have a habit of biting down on hard foods such as stale bread, hard candy, and ice are also more likely to have chipped teeth. Yet, if you have chipped teeth there is an easy and affordable way to fix them: tooth contouring. Contouring can help give you back a more cohesive and beautiful smile. Dr. Vimal Patel has years of experience in tooth contouring and is committed to giving you a smile you are proud to show off.

Tooth Contouring

What to expect – During the initial exam, your dentist will take an x-ray of your teeth to make sure that there is enough enamel surrounding the inner pulp so the procedure won’t damage your tooth. Yet, most people will qualify since the procedure only removes a small amount of your enamel. Also, because your enamel has no nerve endings, you wont need to go under local anesthetic and the procedure can take as little as half an hour.

The procedure – When you come in for your contouring procedure your dentist will use a sanding drill to remove chips, points, and round misshapen teeth.  Once the teeth have been sculpted into the desired shape, they will smooth and polish the tooth to give it a more finished and clean look. Those needing less work to be done may only need one appointment, but for more extensive reshaping, you may need to come in for two or three appointments.

Afterwards – Since tooth contouring is such a non-invasive procedure, you will need little to no follow up care besides maintaining good oral hygiene. In some cases, you may experience moderate sensitivity, but it will often go away within a day or two. Though unlikely, contouring may make you more prone to breakage and tooth decay since some of the enamel has been removed, but generally those who brush and floss regularly wont experience any problems.
